It all began with Gaetano Marzotto.
Santa Margherita is the beating heart of the Group. It has always been committed to environmental sustainability and preservation, and constantly strives towards innovation to keep up with changing tastes and drinking habits.
In 1952, in the hills around Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, the first venture into creating a sparkling Prosecco began and in just a few decades this local sparkling wine became a global phenomenon. 1961 saw the launch of Pinot Grigio Santa Margherita: a new wine which was sophisticated and modern and the result of Count Marzotto’s decision to experiment with making a white varietal wine purely from the copper-skinned grapes of the vines from which it takes its name. Icon of the success of ‘Made in Italy’ products, Pinot Grigio Santa Margherita is today celebrated as an extraordinarily versatile wine, perfect for pairing with many different foods and to be enjoyed on many different occasions.
The 1980s ushered in new styles of Chardonnay, making it young, fresh, fruity and easy to drink, and Müller Thurgau, with a sparkling version which combined the striking aromatic profile of this grape variety with the carefree pleasure of bubbles.
We work using renewable energy: the solar power system installed on the roof of our winery and the nearby biomass plant, mean the Group’s headquarters in Fossalta di Portogruaro are fully energy self-sufficient.
